Structural Transformation and the role of Foreign Direct Investment in Portugal: a descriptive analysis for the period 1990-2005
In this paper we use a recent measure of the “income level of a country’s exports” proposed by Hausmann et al. (2007) to characterize the structure of the Portuguese export basket, its recent evolution and the role of FDI in this process. We find that between 1990 and 2005 the improvement in the income content of the Portuguese export basket was achieved through a positive “structural transformation effect” that more than offset the negative effect of having a significant share of products exposed to an increasing competition from emerging economies. We find that the weight of exports with “high” and “very high” income content increased considerably in this period, with these two classes explaining more than half of the total export growth. Analysing the presence of FDI in the different export products, we find a higher than average share of foreign affiliated firms in products with “High” and “Very High” income content. These and other pieces of evidence suggest that FDI has played a relevant role both in the growth of Portuguese exports and in the increase of their income content.International trade, Foreign Direct Investment, The Portuguese Economy, Structural transformation
Characterization of the killer toxin KTCf20 from wickerhamomyces anomalus, a potential biocontrol agent against wine spoilage yeasts
Wickerhamomyces anomalus Cf20 secretes the killer toxin KTCf20 that inhibits several wine spoilage yeasts of the species Pichia guilliermondii, P. membranifaciens, Brettanomyces bruxellensis and Dekkera anomala. KTCf20 binds cell wall extracts from the sensitive target P. guilliermondii Cd6; however, this capacity was lost when cell wall extracts were pre-treated with fungal β-glucanase. Pustulan and laminarin inhibited killer activity, suggesting that β-1,3 and β-1,6-glucans may be the putative binding sites for KTCf20 on the cell wall of sensitive cells. The toxin was produced and showed to be stable and highly active at physicochemical conditions suitable for winemaking process. In addition, the strain Cf20 is compatible with Saccharomyces cerevisiae in co-culture conditions being potential its application in a mixed starter culture. These data suggest that W. anomalus Cf20 and/or KTCf20 are promising biocontrol agents against spoilage yeasts during wine-making process.

Linking patient data to scientific knowledge to support contextualized mining
Tese de mestrado, Bioinformática e Biologia Computacional, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2022ICU readmissions are a critical problem associated with either serious conditions, ill nesses, or complications, representing a 4 times increase in mortality risk and a financial
burden to health institutions. In developed countries 1 in every 10 patients discharged
comes back to the ICU. As hospitals become more and more data-oriented with the adop tion of Electronic Health Records (EHR), there as been a rise in the development of com putational approaches to support clinical decision.
In recent years new efforts emerged, using machine learning approaches to make ICU
readmission predictions directly over EHR data. Despite these growing efforts, machine
learning approaches still explore EHR data directly without taking into account its mean ing or context. Medical knowledge is not accessible to these methods, who work blindly
over the data, without considering the meaning and relationships the data objects. Ontolo gies and knowledge graphs can help bridge this gap between data and scientific context,
since they are computational artefacts that represent the entities in a domain and how the
relate to each other in a formalized fashion.
This opportunity motivated the aim of this work: to investigate how enriching EHR
data with ontology-based semantic annotations and applying machine learning techniques
that explore them can impact the prediction of 30-day ICU readmission risk. To achieve
this, a number of contributions were developed, including: (1) An enrichment of the
MIMIC-III data set with annotations to several biomedical ontologies; (2) A novel ap proach to predict ICU readmission risk that explores knowledge graph embeddings to
represent patient data taking into account the semantic annotations; (3) A variant of the
predictive approach that targets different moments to support risk prediction throughout
the ICU stay.
The predictive approaches outperformed both state-of-the-art and a baseline achieving
a ROC-AUC of 0.815 (an increase of 0.2 over the state of the art). The positive results
achieved motivated the development of an entrepreneurial project, which placed in the
Top 5 of the H-INNOVA 2021 entrepreneurship award
Tissue donation context in Portugal: defining a strategy for improvement
The scarcity of tissue available for transplantation is a problem all over the world,
especially in Portugal, as demand exceeds the available supply. In this context the central
problem of this work is to know how the current context of chronic shortage of tissues
available for transplantation can be improved. Therefore, the objective of this work is to
contribute to the understanding of the problem of tissue donation and to define strategies
to improve the context of shortage of tissues available for transplantation in Portugal.
Methodology: On this research, a qualitative methodology was used with a systematic
and consistent literature review, interviews with experts, informal meetings, nonparticipative observations, applications for official data and search in institutional
websites, bibliographic databases and governmental websites. For a more objective
analysis of the donation processes in Portugal, its gaps and problems, the content analysis
method was used to analyze 6 semi-formal interviews. This analysis had the support of
TROPES® software, versions 8.4 and 7.2. The SWOT analysis summarized all the
information in order to facilitate the understanding of the context and establish possible
strategies for improvement.
Results: The content analysis results showed that economic restrains are leading to a
policy of cost control and an institutional-based policy limiting the development of new
and more efficient procedures. Results highlight the importance of a centralized system
to fight the clear lack of resources in Portugal. The Spanish paradigm may be used to
improve the current Portuguese model in order to increase its efficiency and effectiveness.
Conclusions: It’s very important to optimize the few resources allocated to the activity
and perform regulation updates to provide the foundation necessary on which to build a
centralized and more efficient system.
Neste contexto a
A análise
Relation between debt and market power evidence on Portuguese firms
Mergers and acquisitions: integration models of acquired systems integration services firms, Ericsson case
A large literature in M&A studies the problem of integration models considering the
economical and financial aspects, the value creation, the synergies, the cultural
considerations, integration steps and plans to allow firms to make decisions that are
optimal for the acquirer. An important result from this literature is that there are
integration archetypes to meet the majority of possible integration realities and that
there isn’t a right or wrong model but rather a need for alignment between acquirer
and acquired firm considering the various parts of each firm. Careful considerations of
the criteria such as the organizational structure, the policies or the directives to meet
the designed strategy are required to achieve the highest value. The author objectives
in this paper are to investigate whether or not there is an optimal model to meet the
Ericsson case, for acquisitions in the Systems Integration business. The insights of the
M&A literature have allowed the developing of a framework to conduct a thorough
analysis on what is behind the decisions of managerial choices and the reality which
managers have to face while facing decision on how to conduct an integration
process. The significance of specificities of business object of the acquired services
companies, being value generated by assets of knowledge, skill and abilities raise the
implication of the intangible aspects and relationships of behaviors in the
organizations. The paper covers the specific case of Ericsson, derives a relationship
between culture, strategy, structure and corporate renewal, reviews the options
considered and provides a recommendation of for the appropriateness of the
integration model to be followed.
sejam bem sucedidas.
A especificidade e significância do objecto
adequado
Sequential Protocols’ Behaviour Analysis
The growing adoption of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has motivated the development
of tools capable of detecting valid SIP dialogues, in order to potentially identify
behavioural traits of the protocol. This thesis serves as a starting point for characterising
SIP dialogues, in terms of distinct signalling sequences, and providing a reliable classification
of SIP sequences. We start by analysing sequential pattern mining algorithms in an
off-line manner, providing valuable statistical information regarding the SIP sequences.
In this analysis some classical Sequential Pattern Mining algorithms are evaluated, to
gather insights on resource consumption and computation time. The results of the analysis
lead to the identification of every possible combinations of a given SIP sequence in a
fast manner.
In the second stage of this work we study different stochastic tools to classify the SIP
dialogues according to the observed SIP messages. Deviations to previously observed
SIP dialogues are also identified. Some experimental results are presented, which adopt
the Hidden Markov Model jointly used with the Viterbi algorithm to classify multiple
SIP messages that are observed sequentially. The experimental tests include a stochastic
dynamic evaluation, and the assessment of the stochastic similarity. The goal of these
tests is to show the reliability and robustness of the algorithms adopted to classify the
incoming SIP sequences, and thus characterizing the SIP dialogues
